Active and Passive Voice:
In academic writing, we encounter two types of voices: ‘active voice’ and ‘passive voice.’ The choice between them depends on the specific situation. Active voice occurs when the subject of a sentence performs an action. For example,
“Afan is playing cricket.”
Here, you can see that Afan, who is the subject, is performing an action.
Passive Voice: When the subject in a sentence is not performing an action but is instead receiving the action from the object, we refer to this situation as passive voice. For example,
“Cricket is being played by Afan.”
Principles: When converting active voice sentences into passive voice, it is essential to adhere to certain rules. While some of these rules may vary from tense to tense, there are others that must be consistently applied across all tenses.
Rule 1: Whenever an active voice sentence is to be converted into passive voice, the subject will change its place with the object. For example, in the sentence
“Nabiha is drinking water,”
where ‘Nabiha’ is the subject and ‘water’ is the object, to convert this sentence into passive voice, we will place ‘water’ at the beginning and ‘Nabiha’ at the end of the sentence. Therefore, it becomes
“Water is being drunk by Nabiha.”
Rule 2: The second rule is to use an appropriate helping verb, which we will discuss step by step in detail. However, for your convenience, it is important to understand here that “am” will be converted into “am being,” “is” will be converted into “is being,” and “are” will be converted into “are being.” In this sentence, there was “is,” so we will replace it with “is being.”
Rule 3: Whenever you convert an active voice sentence to passive voice, you will always use the third form of the verb; in this case, it will be ‘drunk.’
Rule 4: Whenever you wish to transform a sentence from active voice to passive voice, you will always employ ‘by’ as a preposition.
After all these rules, the sentence will be written like this in passive voice:
“Water is being drunk by Nabiha.”

دراصل Academic writing میں دو طرح کی Voices ہوتی ہیں ، ایک کو ہم کہتے ہیں Active Voice اور دوسری کو Passive Voice پر یہ صورتحال پر منحصر ہوتا ہے کے ہم ان دونوں میں سے کسی ایک کا استعمال کرتے ہیں.
فعل معروف یا Active Voice : جب کسی جملے میں Subject کوئی Action انجام دے رہا ہو تو ایسی صورتحال فعل معروف یا Active Voice کہلائی جاۓ گی . مثال کے طور پر: .Afan is playing cricket
آپ دیکھ سکتے ہیں کے Afan جو کے ایک Subject ہے اور ایک Action انجام دے رہا ہے.
فعل مجہول یا Passive Voice: اگر کسی جملے میں Subject خود کوئی Action پرفارم نہ کر رہا ہو بلکہ Object سے Action حاصل کر رہا ہو تو ایسی صورتحال کو ہم فعل مجہول یا Passive Voice کہتے ہیں. مثال کے طور پر:
.Cricket is being played by Afan
اصول: جب ہم فعل معروف یا Active Voice کے جملوں کو فعل مجہول یا Passive Voice میں تبدیل کرتے ہیں تو ہمیں کچھ اصولوں کا خیال رکھنا پڑھتا ہے. ان اصولوں میں کچھ اصول تو مختلف Tenses میں مختلف ہوتے ہیں پر چند اصول آپ کو تمام Tenses میں ایک ہی طرح follow کرنے پڑیں گے.
پہلا اصول: جب بھی کوئی فعل معروف یا Active Voice کا جملہ فعل مجہول یا Passive Voice میں convert کرنا ہو تو Subject اپنی جگہ Object کے ساتھ بدل لے گا. مثال کے طور پر: Nabiha is drinking water
اب اس جملے میں “Subject” Nabiha ہے اور “Object” Water ، تو اس جملے کو Passive Voice میں Convert کرنے کے لیے ہم Water کو Nabiha کی جگہ شروع میں لے آئیں گے اور Nabiha کو جملے کے آخر پے Water کی جگہ لکھ لیں گے.
دوسرا اصول: دوسرا اصول ہم ایک مناسب Helping Verb کا استعمال کریں گے، جو کے ہم تمام Tenses کے پرھتے وقت تفصیل سے discuss کریں گے. البتہ آپ کی آسانی کے لیے یہاں اتنا سمجھنا ضروری ہے کے am بدل جاۓ گا am being میں ،is جو ہے وہ is being میں اور are ہو جاۓ گا are being. تو اس جملے میں is تھا لہذا is کے ساتھ ہم being لکھیں گے .
تیسرا اصول: جب بھی آپ کسی Active Voice کے جملے کو Passive Voice میں Convert کریں گے تو آپ ہمیشہ Verb کی تیسری فام لکھیں گے ، تو یہ ہوجاۓ گا Drunk.
چوتھا اصول: جب بھی آپ Active Voice سے Passive Voice میں کسی جملے کو convert کرنا چاہیں تو آپ ہمیشہ Preposition کے طور پر “by” کو استعمال کریں گے .
تو ان تمام Rules کے بعد Passive Voice میں یہ جملہ کچھ اس طرح لکھا جاۓ گا:
پانی نبیحہ سے پیا جا رہا ہے .
